‘Buffalo Soldiers’ Legacy, Garfield Monument Presentation August 24

Naco, AZ: The Naco Heritage Alliance is pleased to announce an upcoming presentation by author and historian Sharon Kennedy on the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers. The event, titled ‘Buffalo Soldiers and the Garfield Monument,’ will take place on Saturday, August 24, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. at the Warren Peace Café, located at 123 Arizona St, Warren, AZ.

Kennedy’s presentation will explore the remarkable journey of the 10th Cavalry, an all-Black regiment, to the Arizona Territory in 1885 and their efforts in building a monument to honor President James A. Garfield. This discussion will shed light on a significant yet often overlooked chapter in American history.

The event is free and open to the public, with copies of Kennedy’s book available for purchase at $10. Attendees are encouraged to register in advance at https://forms.gle/jNFLnFXiUQxp55UMA.

About the Buffalo Soldiers and Camp Naco: Camp Naco, located just north of the US-Mexico border, is a significant site in the history of the Buffalo Soldiers. Established as part of the US War Department’s Mexican Border Defense Project, the camp was home to the Ninth and Tenth Cavalry Regiments, who served with distinction during a time of racial segregation.

Today, the Naco Heritage Alliance, a 501(c)(3) organization, is dedicated to preserving Camp Naco and its legacy. The site has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has received substantial funding for its restoration and development as a community resource.
