Fort Huachuca lands new defense mission

TUCSON — U.S. Rep. Juan Ciscomani (R-Ariz.) announced April 15 that the U.S. Department of War has selected Fort Huachuca as the new home for a new mission. Fort Huachuca is positioning AZ-06 at the forefront of the next generation of defense.

“This new mission is a win for Sierra Vista and Cochise County, a win for Arizona and a win for our national security,” said Ciscomani, who has led the effort in Washington working with the Trump Administration and Secretary of the Air Force to bring a new mission to Arizona’s 6th Congressional District. “Most importantly, this a testament to Fort Huachuca and its nationally recognized role as an unequalled strategic asset, not just today, but for the future of our national defense.”

Since last year, Ciscomani has championed the Fort as the best possible site for a new mission, which will use the 149-year-old Army post as the base.
“Fort Huachuca got its start in the 19th century as a frontier cavalry garrison,” said Ciscomani. “The Fort that was once the home of the legendary Buffalo Soldiers is now the tip of the spear for some of the most technologically advanced 21st century military missions, including the U.S. Army Intelligence Center of Excellence, the Network Enterprise Technology Command and the Electronic Proving Ground.”
Located about 15 miles north of the border with Mexico, Fort Huachuca is the largest employer in Cochise County. It encompasses 946 square miles of restricted airspace and 2,500 square miles of protected electronic ranges.

“The case for the Fort was strengthened,” Ciscomani said, “by a regional ecosystem that includes the University of Arizona, Raytheon, Northrop Grumman and Honeywell. Fort Huachuca’s one-of-a-kind capabilities, its location and supporting infrastructure made it an obvious choice for this new mission. We should all be proud of this major win.”
