Lieutenant Colonel Salvatore Carpitano, a devoted father, husband, and military aviator, was killed Tuesday in a traffic collision while driving home from work near Luke Air Force Base in Arizona.
Carpitano is survived by his wife, Emilia, and their daughter, Sofia, 7. Family and friends say his wife and child were the center of his world, and that his greatest pride was his role as a husband and father.
Born in Sicily, Carpitano served as a pilot and instructor and was assigned to Luke Air Force Base as part of the Italian Air Force’s representation mission in the United States. He was serving as an instructor pilot with the Italian Air Force Representation Office, known as RAMI, at the time of his death.
Italy’s Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, issued a public statement mourning Carpitano’s passing.
“With deep sadness, I learned of the death of Major Salvatore Carpitano of the Italian Air Force, who died following a tragic road accident near Luke Air Force Base in the United States, where he was serving as an instructor pilot with the Italian Air Force Representation,” Crosetto said. “On behalf of myself and the entire Defense establishment, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, to the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, General Antonio Conserva, and to all colleagues of the Italian Air Force.”

Those who worked alongside Carpitano described him as a highly respected instructor and a dedicated professional who balanced his military responsibilities with an unwavering commitment to his family.
A fundraising effort has been launched to support Emilia and Sofia as they face the emotional and financial challenges following his sudden death. Funds will assist with immediate expenses and help the family relocate to Italy to be closer to relatives during this difficult period. All donations are directed to Emilia.
As of publication, more than $41,000 has been raised through more than 300 donations, reflecting broad support from the international military community and beyond.
Organizers have established both American and Italian donation options to accommodate supporters worldwide. Those wishing to contribute in euros may do so through the Italian-based fund.
Contributions are being accepted in honor of Lt. Col. Carpitano’s life of service and in support of the family he cherished.
