Stolen Valor Act signed by Gov. Hobbs

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs signed Senate Bill 1424, the Stolen Valor Act, which is a strict new law that would criminalize the fraudulent use of military service or honors for special benefit.

Sponsored and championed by Rep. Walt Blackman, R-Snowflake, SB1424 makes it illegal to knowingly lie about military service or decorations to obtain jobs, government benefits, or other privileges meant for veterans.

“The Stolen Valor Act is about protecting the integrity of service, sacrifice, and the sacred bond between our state and those who’ve worn the uniform,” said Blackman in a statement. “Today, Arizona draws a clear line: if you falsely claim the honor of military service, there will be consequences.”

The legislation was drafted in response to growing reports of con artists falsely claiming honors for financial gain, according to a statement from the House majority. It will reportedly strengthen the states’ ability to prosecute stolen valor cases.

“I am extremely thankful for everyone who stood with me to get this legislation across the finish line—veteran advocates, legislative colleagues, community leaders, and every constituent who spoke up and demanded action,” said Blackman. “This victory belongs to every service member and military family of those who has earned their place with honor.”

The law will empower local and state prosecutors to hold individuals accountable for impersonating veterans and misrepresenting their military status to exploit the benefits and recognition reserved for those who served, according to the statement.

The bill was previously held up in the State Senate’s Judiciary and Elections Committee by Sen. Wendy Rodgers, who chairs the committee. Rodgers campaigned with Blackman’s primary opponent, Steve Slaton.

Navajo County Republican Committee (NCRC) discovered last year that Slaton provided an “altered DD 214 claiming combat veteran status and showing qualifications and awards.”

Blackman subsequently beat Slaton by 9,000 votes following the discovery.
