VA unveils automated pharmacy system to improve veterans’ prescription services

VA’s Southwest Consolidated Mail Outpatient Pharmacy (SW CMOP) in Tucson, Arizona, mailed a record 23,204,802 prescriptions to Veterans last year, with projections indicating 23.8 million this year.

Director Michael T. Sutherland, Pharm.D., credits this achievement to the hard work of the facility’s employees. The SW CMOP, one of seven automated VA mail service pharmacies, mails approximately 56,000 packages daily, with a turnaround time of two days.

During a recent visit, VA Secretary Denis McDonough recognized seven employees for their dedication: Lorrena Estillore, Aida Diallo, Jacinda San Nicolas, Dan Duval, Tyree Ross, Samuel Swoopes, and Sonya Vidal.

The automation at SW CMOP allows pharmacists at local VA facilities to focus on patient care, with nearly 84% of all VA prescriptions nationwide being processed through these facilities. Since 2009, VA’s CMOPs have consistently been rated “among the best” in customer satisfaction by the J.D. Power U.S. Pharmacy Study.
