Veterans Affairs urges hydration during summer heat

July 10, 2024 – Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) urges veterans to stay vigilant about hydration as temperatures rise this summer. Proper hydration is critical to maintaining health, preventing heat-related illnesses.

Hydration plays a vital role in bodily functions, including regulating temperature, maintaining blood circulation, supporting biochemical reactions. During the summer, veterans are advised to consume at least three to four liters of water daily. Infusing water with fruits, vegetables, or herbs can make it more appealing, help increase intake (Home) (KIMSHealth).

Key recommendations include:

  • Drink before thirst hits: Thirst indicates that dehydration has already begun. Drinking consistently throughout the day can help prevent this (KIMSHealth).
  • Monitor fluid loss: Track water intake, especially during physical activities. Weighing yourself before, after exercise can help gauge fluid loss; replace lost weight with water accordingly (Home).
  • Incorporate hydrating foods: Fruits, vegetables such as watermelon, cucumbers, berries provide additional hydration, essential electrolytes (Valley Health Wellness & Fitness Center).
  • Use electrolyte solutions: During extended physical activity, consider drinks with added electrolytes or natural sources like coconut water, bananas to replenish minerals lost through sweat (KIMSHealth).

Veterans should be aware of dehydration symptoms, including dizziness, rapid heartbeat, dark urine, take immediate action if these occur. In severe cases, seek medical attention promptly to prevent complications like heat stroke (UI Health).
