Washington, D.C. – The Veterans Health Administration announces improvements to the Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) renewal process, allowing Veterans to speed up check-ins for VA health appointments. Although not required for VA health care, an updated VHIC provides a faster check-in experience.
Why the VHIC renewal process matters
With millions of VHICs nearing expiration, the National Health Eligibility Center (HEC) is notifying about 1.5 million Veterans to renew their cards. Keeping the VHIC current helps Veterans avoid delays at VA facilities.
VHIC renewal process: online steps for easy renewal
The preferred method for VHIC renewal is online. Veterans can complete the renewal process by following these steps:
- Access the Renewal Link: Visit eauth.va.gov/accessva or use the QR code found on the renewal postcard sent by the VA.
- Submit Required Information: After accessing the website, select the VHIC renewal option, upload your ID, and submit the necessary details.
After submission, the VHIC request shows an “On Hold” status while it moves through the review process. Approved cards are printed and mailed within 7-14 days for domestic addresses and 21-30 days for international ones. Due to high demand, processing may take longer.
In-person VHIC renewal option
Veterans can also renew their VHIC at local VA facilities. They must bring a valid, government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport. In-person renewals follow the same processing timeline since all cards are centrally printed and mailed.
Important reminders about the VHIC renewal process
- Travel Pay Policy: VA does not cover travel pay for trips made only to renew a VHIC, though Veterans can renew during scheduled VA appointments.
- VHIC not required for care: The VHIC is optional but helpful for faster check-ins.
- “On Hold” Status: If a VHIC request status says “On Hold,” it is actively moving through the processing steps.
